  2. Like the “Elgin Marbles” in the British Museum, it was “rescued” from destruction. The Pergamon Museum narrowly survived Allied bombing at the end of WWII. The exterior is heavily pitted by shrapnel. The whole thing could have been destroyed then. Guess the Gate would have been safer in Turkey.
